You will start in the lowlands at Duran traveling behind a 2-6-0 to the San Jacinto Festival in Yaguachi. Then you will tackle the Andes Highlands with 2-8-0, #53 battling the 5% grades of the switch backs on the Devil's Nose. You'll visit the colorful Indian Market at Guamote and ride through the Valley of the Volcanoes to Rio Bamba. Then continue up to the highest point on the railway, at 11,800 ft. Urbena, and see our steam train with 20,509 ft. high Mt. Chimborazo towering above it.

Machines of Iron traveled to Australia in April 2000 to ride the rails behind vintage steam and diesel locomotives, NSWGR 38 Class 4-6-2 Pacifics, Victoria Railways R Class 4-6-4 Hudsons, NSWGR 42 Class Co-Co GM Diesel, and NSWGR 442 Class Co-Co Alco Diesel. On Easter Sunday our crews visited the Ballarine Peninsula Railway and were there as the crew fired up the railroad's 2-8-2 and 4-6-0. South African Garratts/DVD

The cloud of steam on the South African horizon belonged to the narrow gauge Garratt locomotives. Serving the industrial railways of South Africa in the 1990s, these articulated locomotives were hard workers. This 1995 trip on a special steam excursion records the Garratts on several railways, including a two and one-half foot gauge line. Not long after our trip, the Garratts were replaced by diesels.
